![]() I don't want a career, that makes things easier hey! I think the industry will (and to be honest, already kinda is) switch to quasi-full-on copy editing, with companies offering mostly revised computer generated translations. If you want a 30yr career in this field, please don't ignore what 圆 progress looks like. What I find even more incredible is you can truly see it getting better as months go by. You only need to compare 5yrs ago Google translate and Todays Deepl to get a sense of the shocking pace of Machine Learning.Įven DeepL vs current Google Translate is crazy, DeepL is so powerful I'm genuinely flabbergasted. I do agree with you on the job being in danger, especially for anyone not being specialized beyond imagination or literary translators. I'm already switching job right now, transitioning from translation to bicycle mechanic. How much longer are you planning to work as a translator? Unless you are very close to retirement, I would confront the possibility that your job may be in danger. It's grasp on grammar and sentences that make sense is tenuous at times, but it methodically powers through everything and never drops sentences just because the AI felt like it. In comparison, Google translate is dumb(er) but faithful. For example if it's a message asking someone for a difficult task and ends with a sincere message of gratitude like "I'd just like to mention how very grateful I am for taking time out of your busy day to look at this", it often just spits back the Japanese equivalent of "thank you very much." So it's definitely a powerful tool, but also needs someone who can spot when its AI occasionally tries to cut corners. It's virtually impeccable for technical matters, but it tends to just give up and even silently drop entire sentences when it comes to pleasantries. I used to use both DeepL and Mirai for this, but I've basically dropped Mirai for the past year since DeepL was almost consistently better.ĭeepL does have its quirks though. I know I can translate it without any help, but I have a habit of running my own translation through those services to translate it back into Japanese both as a check to weed out typos and brainfarts, and to show the requestor as proof that it checks out. Personally, DeepL was a few notches above Mirai translate.Īs a native Japanese-English bilingual in Japan, my job isn't a translator or interpreter, but I regularly get coworkers asking me to translate little Japanese blurbs or incident tickets into English to reach out to teams in other regions.
